Serena Williams hails Tiger Woods’ influence as she continues her US Open run
Tiger Woods has enjoyed a hugely successful Major Championship campaign while Serena Williams has continued her own winning ways but there is one major where the tennis great says she is still not 100%.
Woods is through to the 2018 Masters Championship and he is bidding to win a fifth Major while Williams has just qualified for the women’s U.S. Open after a successful defence of both the Wimbledon and US Open titles.
However, Williams remains the last man in women’s tennis to win an Open at the US Open and she is also the last winner to make her way to the final at the US Open.
Having won the 2017 Australian Open and 2018 Wimbledon title, Williams has now reached the summit of the sport and is beginning to look like a world class competitor.
However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion will be going into this tournament as the heavy favourite with bookmakers with the winner guaranteed £250,000 and the opportunity to become world number one for the first time when the Women’s U.S. Open draws to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon.
The US Open is something of a landmark in women’s tennis and is also the only Grand Slam of the year where there are no seeds competing.
Woods now looks set to come out on top from the opening round, where he will face Kyle Edmund (QF), Frances Tinendell (SF) and the first round is scheduled to get under way at 1200 BST on Monday morning.
“I came here to win a Major. So I’m here to win,” he said. “And I’ll do anything to do that. If it means playing the right way, playing on the right day, playing a good battle.”
However, Williams has been on a winning streak since her Wimbledon victory in July and, after holding to victory in qualifying, she is now through to the U.S. Open.
