Nick Kyrgios complains of marijuana smell during US Open second round win

The 20-year-old Australian used the occasion to hit out at his country’s law.

Kyrgios – who reached the US Open quarter-finals with a win over Tommy Haas – was up against a fellow Aussie at Arthur Ashe Stadium as well as his long-time friend Ryan Harrison, who has a habit of testing drugs on himself.

Kyrgios opened the first set by serving for an early break but lost the second.

“It gets annoying – there’s a strong smell at the start of each match,” Kyrgios said. “The last match we played against [Ryan], he put some in water and then had to drink some water. Normally you wouldn’t notice that, but that has been the smell of water for the last three matches – and now the smell of marijuana.“I don’t smell marijuana, but it’s hard to know. It smells a little bit different.”

But he added that he didn’t mind the smell and, in fact, preferred it to the overpowering smell of sweat.
