Serena Williams is on the verge of a sixth career Grand Slam crown

Serena Williams has done it all in tennis, but there’s so much more to come.

There’s something in her style of play, in the way she plays, in the way she’s handled the pressures of this demanding sport. You can’t help but feel a special kind of pride to be able to call her your captain.

“I mean, she’s done everything — I mean, you talk about the game and the way she goes about the game,” said Serena Williams, one of the world’s best players. “I’ve been watching her for 15 years, I know where I’m at and where I want to be. I want to win Grand Slams — I mean, that’s the ultimate goal in my life. And I know exactly where I want to be.”

There really is no way to describe the journey of Williams, who has won five Grand Slam singles titles, was runner-up at Wimbledon and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 2 in October.

But the journey does not end there.

Williams, who turns 33 on Sunday, is inching ever closer to reaching a sixth career Grand Slam crown, having won at Flushing Meadows and the US Open in 2012, French Open in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016. She looks to be closing the career Grand Slams in three Grand Slam events at the moment: the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics.

“I think so. I’m only going to get better and better, and I’m learning so much from watching her every year,” said John McEnroe, who won the 1996 US Open, a feat Williams accomplished in 2002 when she won the Australian Open.

“All sports, when you see someone do something, it’s always good to just study them and learn from that. So that’s one of the reasons why you do it — to get in the mind of someone, to make the next step
