His career as a tennis player seemed nearly over.

His body had been ravaged by Parkinson’s disease. He had lost control of his career, and his own career had almost unraveled. He was about to lose his first grand slam final to Roger Federer.

Then he heard Roger announcing on the court that he had won Wimbledon.

Federer had made his most remarkable comeback after 17 years battling his disease.

Just weeks later, at the US Open in New York, he made Federer one of the sport’s greatest rivals.

It was a new phase in Federer’s journey – one that was about to take him to the summit.

‘I have to say Federer was the toughest opponent I played against’

He had never played against a player like Nadal, who had dominated the big tournaments for 19 years.

Federer had never won a slam, and had lost 13 Grand Slam finals. Nadal came from behind to beat him in the Wimbledon final.

“I have to say Federer was the toughest opponent I played against,” Federer, 52, said, smiling, after his third-set victory over Nadal.

“He was just the last one I expected to meet.”

He was about to play a bigger opponent than ever before. But it wasn’t in the world’s most grandiose sport.

It was on a tennis court. But there was something special about that.

As Federer told ESPN: “I thought I had done it. And then he won Wimbledon. It was unbelievable. And I was waiting for him to do it. I was waiting to give it everything.

“It’s been a great week, I have to say. It’s the first time in my career since I was 17 that I’m really happy about the results. And I haven’t changed my mind about Roger anymore. I believe I still have the best racket.”
