Review: ‘My Policeman’ unspools longing and regret of a Harry Styles-centered sexual triangle
If you were a Harry Styles fan last week, you’ll probably be pleased with Friday night’s episode of ‘My Policeman.’ While ‘Harry’s on the loose’ was not quite the same as when he was last on our screens, it’s at least an improvement on the last two weeks.
The plot was simple: Harry had gone missing in the middle of the night, in a very public location, and Detective Inspector Colin Hendry was on his way to find him. So of course he’d been followed. And while being followed is not exactly the same as being abducted from the middle of nowhere, it was hard not to feel that there was a good chance that Hendry was about to get hit on an open-mic night or at a strip club. There were the first signs that Harry wasn’t all that he appeared to be — from a little too much drinking, to being late at the club and not giving Hendry a look-out. As this was Hendry’s first attempt to track him down, he was also trying to get this into a police-narrative. Harry didn’t care — he was just going to be there on time, as promised. It was as simple as that, really.
As it turned out, the reason Hendry was being followed was not a simple coincidence. He’d asked Harry if he had any drugs — Harry knew that there were drugs in the house. And as soon as that was addressed, things that were apparently unrelated to drugs suddenly became quite confusing. There were references to Harry being “not in his right mind,” “the voice of reason,” and just basically being a weirdo all over the place, and then, in a bizarre twist of fate, he turned out to be quite the right-reason man, who just needed a little more time to work out whether he should actually go down to where the drugs were.
Of course, the drugs weren’t at Harry’s house, but at his dad’s shop — where the cops were. The only difference between the shop and the house was that Harry was now an employee there and they were both owned by Harry’s parents. But what the two cases have in common is that we finally see that, whatever else may be going on in Harry’s life, he had a dad after all. It was a very nice episode for Harry, so many of the scenes
