Mason Greenwood to spend more than a month in custody over attempted rape charge

A North West University (NWU) student and former football captain, Mason Greenwood has been jailed for more than a month in Port Macquarie following an attempted sexual assault in the city which left a female student with major injuries.

Crown prosecutor Natalie Jones said the 35-year-old was jailed for a month for attempted rape, committing a serious assault and common assault.

“When he entered the house the victim was alone and sleeping downstairs in a room as a result of the sexual intercourse,” Jones said. “The victim received significant injuries in the attack.”

The incident occurred in the early hours of April 15, but Greenwood was arrested at a domestic violence incident earlier that day.

Greenwood had been charged with sexual assault, common assault and a serious assault, but was unable to enter a plea due to his alcohol and drug abuse, police said.

Police had alleged Greenwood forced his way into the woman’s house at the rear of the complex and sexually assaulted her while she slept.

Greenwood, a former football captain for NWU in 2010, was arrested and taken into custody by police at his home in the early hours of April 15.

The day after the incident occurred, police issued a warrant for his arrest.

The prosecutor said Greenwood had pleaded guilty to the two serious assaults, which caused the victim pain and discomfort, and had accepted a plea deal that saw him sentenced to a month in prison with no parole in 18 months.

She said after Greenwood’s release from custody the matter would be dealt with by the court and he would be required to be on the system.
