Indonesia police: Stadium exit gates too small for escape of gunman
KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan says investigators have gathered important evidence to be able to prove that the gunman responsible for the attacks at the Marriot Hotel and the KLCC in February and March, that killed 19 people, was linked to a terrorist group.
However, he said the key piece of evidence for prosecution was a statement by a suspect who came out of the stadium after the shooting.
Musa said the statement indicated the gunman was involved with a group called the DAP, which is headed by DAP Youth chief Lim Guan Eng.
Musa said the statement showed that the gunman was at the stadium with the group, which is believed to have been involved in the attacks.
“The statement shows that the suspect acted on his own and he did so with a common purpose,” Musa said, adding that it would be very time-consuming for investigators to go through the records and verify all the details of the statement.
“We have a good understanding of the suspects and we have strong evidence to prove who he was,” Musa said, adding that based on the facts, prosecutors are confident that they would be able to prove the gunman is linked to a terrorist group.
He said this is not only to prove who the gunman is, but also to prove that he had the common purpose of targeting the three hotels and also that the attack on the hotel at the KLCC, which ended his life, was pre-planned and was linked to a terrorist group.
“Investigations are still ongoing,” Musa said.
He said police have been investigating the gunman and are following all the leads, but cannot comment on the progress of the case as that would be premature.
Musa told reporters the police are still treating the case as a murder investigation.
He said the gunman was not carrying any explosives when he entered the Marriot and the attacks on the KLCC and the hotel in the KLCC were carried out by an explosive device, which was detonated after the gunman was in the building.
However, Musa said police had been able to reconstruct the movements of the gunman between the two attacks to show that they were carried out after he entered the
