It was the first of two words that drew the attention of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and local police.
On the MLS club’s opening weekend against the Portland Timbers, D.C. United striker Tommy Heinemann used a racial slur during a conversation with a fan, WUSA-TV reported Friday. The word, which the station later changed to “blackface” after an investigation by an outside agency, apparently drew a reaction from the fan and the two men walked away from each other. D.C. United is the only MLS club that does not have a team-sponsored mascot, so the incident was a public relations nightmare for the club and could cost the team an MLS expansion bid this year.
